Optimising Healthcare Systems for Resilience and Efficiency

We partner with healthcare systems to tackle their most pressing operational challenges – from reducing waiting lists to redesigning entire clinical pathways.

NHS systems face unprecedented pressure. With rising demand and constrained resources, the challenge is no longer just about managing today’s activity, but structurally redesigning services to recover elective performance and optimise capacity. However, operational planning often relies on static averages or historic trends that fail to account for the complexity of modern patient pathways.

At Edge Health, we move beyond basic analysis. We use data-driven insights to help Trusts and Integrated Care Systems (ICS) visualise their true capacity, forecast demand accurately, and implement changes that stick. Whether it is optimising theatre usage or redesigning clinical workflows, our work provides the clarity leaders need to build more resilient services.

From local diagnostic hubs to national policy teams, we help organisations understand not just how they are performing, but why. We dig deeper into the data to separate structural constraints from operational choices. By benchmarking performance against peers and national standards, we provide the evidence base needed to challenge the status quo, enabling leaders to adopt successful models from across the NHS and deliver consistent, high-quality care.

Greater Manchester Early Cancer Diagnosis Strategy

In Greater Manchester, nearly 9,000 people were diagnosed with cancer in between August 2023 and July 2024. While early diagnosis rates have improved (from 53.2% in 2021 to 58.3% in 2024), significant variation and inequality remain across communities. Recognising that earlier detection saves lives, the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance collaborated with Edge Health to develop a five-year strategy (2024-2028) to progress toward the national 75% ambition.

I have worked with Edge on a number of projects. Initially they were appointed to support a national programme focused on delivering quality improvement in stroke services across England. Subsequently, the team led a separate project supporting the development of thrombectomy services, in line with NHS England’s goals to expand access to this vital intervention. The team have been a pleasure to work with. They are able to synthesise large amounts of data in a clear and clinically meaningful way. They can also work with complex groups to deliver high quality reports and outputs with impact. I experienced this firsthand in a series of quality improvement visits to every Comprehensive Stroke Centre in England with NHSE’s Medical Director. We were both impressed with the quality Edge’s work.

As an Alliance, we were aware of the national and regional SACT pressures and wanted to review our demand, capacity and workforce to support service development and raise the awareness of the significant increase in activity we will expect in the coming years. Edge Health worked closely with our clinical teams to understand the pressures and activity in SACT services and to provide recommendations to be delivered across the system including a demand and capacity tool for our biannual SACT assessments. Edge Health are knowledgeable, professional and a very approachable team supporting the requirements of our service.
